Season One
Former one-hit wonder Mavis Rae is now an outspoken and very liberal New York hotelier who marches to the beat of her own drum. She runs the modest Lamont Hotel with the help of Iranian handyman-turned-concierge Nasim, who is trying to become a citizen. She also makes room for her conservative brother Courtney, recently laid off from Enron, and Courtney's girlfriend Rita, who speaks in a sterotypical urban patois—despite the fact that she's white. When she's not dealing with squatters, battling frivolous lawsuits from disgruntled customers, or getting involved in political squabbles, Mavis is caught in the middle of disputes between her brother and his annoying paramour. But whatever the obstacle or mishap, Mavis is determined to run her business and live her life on her own terms, and nobody—especially not a Republican—is going to get in her way.
